Mauritius is a great destination to explore independently. It has great culture, a variety of landscapes and some fantastic nature parks. And while it might be difficult to leave its perfect beaches and transparent waters, it is definitely worth the effort to head inland for some exploration. Whether you re visiting with a family, as a couple or independently, these are some of the places you should put on your list if visiting Mauritius.
We published three videos capturing some of our favourite attraction and nature adventures. In the North of Mauritius, you find l’Aventure du Sucre, Chateau Labourdonnais and the SSR Botanic garden. Except for the botanic garden, they also have great restaurants on site so you can definitely spend half a day in each location. Check them out below.
In the South of the island, there is a complete change of scenery. Here you find the Black River Gorges national park that is perfect for hikes as well as the 7 Coulored Earth and Chamarel waterfall, another popular Mauritius attraction. If you like Rum, the Chamarel Distillery organises tours where you can see the Rum production process and taste several varieties.
In our most recent trip to South Mauritius we stopped for a tea tasting at Bois Cheri estate, the larges tea producer in Mauritius. If you like tea, there are smaller estates you can add to the list like Domaine des Aubinaux in Curepipe or Saint Aubin Estate which also has a vanilla plantation. We would recommend Bois Cheri for the tea tasting and amazing views over the tea plantation.
Another great place to explore is Ebony forest, a conservation project trying to revitalise some of Mauritius’ original Ebony forests and other endangered plants and animals. There is the possibility to walk in the conservation area or explore it by safari truck. The highlight is the viewing platform, with what we believe to be one of the best panoramic views on the island.
But the attractions of Mauritius do not end here. There is more to see, on the water. One of the essential experiences on the island is a catamaran trip to one of the nearby smaller islands. On our first trip to Mauritus we visited Ile Benitier and the Diamond rock, on a day trip starting in Tamarind. This time we went for Ile aux Cerfs . on the West of the Island. Trips depart from Trou d’Eau Douce, a small village with plenty of operators offering trips. On Ile aux Cerfs, we saw some of the most beautiful translucent water on the entire island. All day catamaran trips include snorkeling stops and lunch on board.
In the next post will cover the must do things to do in Port Louis, Mauritius’s capital. Stay tuned!
Safe travels,
