We do not have much content about Romania on the site. Truth is that, until about half a decade ago, it was not too much of a tourist destination, certainly not for the Western Europeans. It was more of a hidden secret in Eastern Europe and few travellers would put it on their list. Things have started changing slightly as people look for more affordable European destinations, particularly in Summer, when the European South is full to the brim. This year in particular, after having weathered the pandemic with a reasonably good track record, Romania seems to have found some appeal to the international tourist. Which is great, as there are lots of great sports to uncover and food to try out.

A day in Bucharest with the kids – what to see in Romania’s capital

I spend part of my university years in Bucharest and was sure I knew everything about the city. But after taking a tour with the help of a kind and knowledgeable guide and with two kinds in tow, it seems that I did not know all that much really.

During our 3h tour we found out many interesting things about Romania’s capital. We selected the best bits to share them with you and hopefully provide some inspiration should you decide to visit Romania one day. It is a bit rough around the edges but with a bit of time to explore, it will always hold a special place your heart.

Driving the Transfagarasan, an epic Romanian roadrip

Transfagarasan, the name of the road that links the South part of Romania with Transilvania was made famous in Western Europe by the British TV show Top Gear where it received the title of “best road in the world”. But even before gaining this notoriety, it was considered one of the most spectacular roadrips in Eastern Europe for its hight and beautiful views. Tourists from all over the world are now going to Romania to drive this 90 km stretch of road that goes up to an altitude of 2000 km and crossing the Southern section of the Carpathians.

Best 5 restaurants for traditional Romanian food in Bucharest

I know Bucharest well as I used to study there before moving to Brussels. Now still, I often travel back and forth between the two every other month or so. Living abroad, I learned to appreciate a good Romanian restaurant, not only for surprising the occasional friend after a long sight-seeing day but also to indulge in some tasty cooking myself.

As with many Eastern European capitals the food scene is constantly evolving but there are a few places that have been now around for some time and I consider them to be a reference when looking for a good traditional meal. Spoiler alert, this post will make you hungry and maybe even make you reach for a credit card and book a flight to Bucharest.
