About half way from Santiago to the South of Chile lies the Lake District. This area is connected with Argentina’s Bariloche District through a system of lakes that may be navigated in order to cross the border from one country to the other. Many travellers choose to do just that, usually with the help of a local tourism agency that can book all ferry tickets and bus land transfers in advance.
We had two days in Valparaiso and limited prior preparation on the Must-sees. We knew there was a second Neruda house recommended to us from Santiago – La Sebastiana. Also, we wanted to try fresh seafood and set out on foot to discover the whimsically painted houses that Valpo is well known for. So, once we checked in at the hotel (Palacio Astorreca – a perfect location) we inquired about the best way to discover the heart of the city by foot and got ourselves a map.
We landed early in the morning on Saturday 3rd November and had three full days to discover the city before heading to the next destination on the coast. Our base was the lovely boutique hotel The Aubrey in Ballavista neighbourhood, nested at the foothills of Cerro San Cristobal.
I travelled to China in the beginning of June but, as it’s often the case, normal life took over upon my return and did not yet manage to record my impressions. The main purpose of the trip was work related. However, I extended my stay to be able to discover Beijing ( and a bit of Xi’an ) at leisure. I ended up spending 5 full days exploring Beijing and 1 and 1/2 days in Xi’an.
Ghent is a short, one hour drive from Brussels and has plenty to keep you and the kids engagged for a day or a week- end. Its pedestrian city center is the largest in Belgium which means more freedom to run around for the little ones. You’ll have to watch out for the tram though, it can be pretty silent.

When you had enough of the beach, you should definitely jump in your car to discover more of the island. We started by exploring the North during a day road-trip to the Shipwreck viewpoint. This was the longest trip as we almost crossed the entire island. Even so, we still managed to squeeze a bit of beach time in the late afternoon. Other activities can be done on less than a half day as the distances are relatively short and many points of interest, including Zante town, are located in the Southern part of the island. The beach is never too far on Zakynthos. Wherever you are on the island, you will have a great choice of beaches, some only a short drive away. We have toured a good number of them in search for the perfect family beach. For us, that is clean sand (with few or no pebbles) and water, smooth self for a few meters and no motor sports or loud bars to spoil the atmosphere.

We arrived in Jeju by plane from Busan. We booked the tickets about two weeks before but there were planes leaving literally every 10 minutes so if you are more of a ‘spur of the moment’ person, there will be a seat for you.

Belgrade was the venue of a conference that I attended in May. While walking between work related events, I managed to get a good overview of the city centre and most touristic attractions. It all looked green and lovely, with many cafes spread along the cobbled streets. At the end of the conference , I extended my stay for a couple of days to explore in more detail this part of the European South.
