Where to ski in Austria with a family – POST Family Resort, Unken

After three years of pandemic break, in March 2022 was time to get back on the slopes. But with two small children, it is not obvious how one can organise a ski trip to Austria so that both adults, older brother (6yo) and baby sister (2 yo) can have a great time skiing and being active. We think we found the solution: family hotels, also referred to as kinder hotels in Austria.

As our son speaks both German and French, we were wondering what would be the better option for his ski lessons: back to France or trying a new place in Austria. You can read about organising a first ski experience for 3 years olds in France here. After some research we found a family hotel in Austria that looked really wonderful and that promised childcare options as of 1 year old – the POST Family Resort in Unken. So we decided to try for the first time an Austrian family ski holiday in a Family resort.

The drive down to Unken in Austria from Brussels is about 900 km. With 2 small kids and one driver, we decided to make a pit stop in Germany. If you have to drive the Brussels to Salzburg route (Unken is about 20 km from Salzburg) do allow for plenty of time around Munich. Stop for a toilet break and some food before reaching Munich as there are always traffic jams on the many highways surrounding Munich and on the segment leading to the Austrian border, no matter the time of the day. Once we arrived, we were absolutely won over by the resort and the beautiful village.

Here are our first day impressions

We spent a whole week in the resort and really enjoyed how easy it makes for families, especially families with young children to be able to enjoy skiing. After the ski part of the day was done, parents could also enjoy the Spa for a couple of hours while the kids were having fun in the kids club with the hotel mascots: Unki and Unkine, going to the kids cinema and even the water world. Finally, food was absolutely outstanding. We can see why this hotel is actually one of the top hotels in Austria overall (here the Trip Advisor 2022 awards, no 15). We met several families coming to this hotel for 5 to 7 years in a row.

Here is how a week skiing in Austria with kids would look like at POST- Family Resort looks like:
