Our road trip from Lisbon to the Algarve- 4 weeks in Portugal

This is the itinerary of our trip to South Portugal in 2021. We have detailed posts and vlogs from each location so do check them out. Portugal is a great destination in the European Summer and with an amazing quality price ratio. It is also one of the most uncrowded places in the South of Europe. Not sure how long the secret of how great the nature, food and people of Portugal are will remain hidden. It is an amazing place to explore independently and with the family.

We spent the first week in Lisbon. We stayed in an AirBnB close to Parque Eduado, a couple of Metro stops from Restauradores square, in the heart of the city. It was my fifth time in the Portuguese capital and second time with the family. We wrote and vloged about our experiences in the city, the oceanarium and Belem .

From Lisbon we went to Evora, in the heart of Alentejo region. Evora old city s a UNESCO world heritage site and the perfect place to try Alentejo’s food. We explored the city and its surrounding wineries for 3 days and have lots of tips on great places to spend time with the family here.

From Evora, we drove deeper in the Alentejo region to the city of Beja, the hottest place in Portugal. We stayed in a refurbished Franciscan monastery, an experience in itself. We spent 3 days here but we used one day to drive to Badoca Safari Park, at the coast. This was a great day our with the kids that needed a nature break after almost 2 weeks of city visits.

We headed to Villa Nova de Milfontes where we spent 4 nights enjoying the beach and laid back atmosphere of the place. It was our favourite stop in Portugal and one that, despite tourism, still keep the authentic Portuguese vibe that is missing from some corners of the Algarve.

The next stop for 3 nights was Lagos, in the heart of the Algarve. Here the highlight were the rock formations at Ponta da Peidade and beautiful beaches. Due to its position in the Algarve, Lagos would also be a perfect base to explore the entire Southern coast.

After Lagos, we headed to Tavira, close to the Spanish border. Tavira has some of the warmest water in the Algarve in the Ilha da Tavira and very charming farm stays. Our stay at Quinta do Marco in Tavira was a highlight of our trip in the Algarve.

For our last 4 nights in Portugal, we chose the Southwestern most point of continental Europe and the surf capital of Portugal, the village of Sagres. This is the perfect place for dolphin watching and rugged cliff views.

To top it all up, we stayed at one of the most child-friendly places in Europe, the Martinhal Resort in Sagres. With childcare from 6 month old, a host of activities for families of all ages and good food, it is hard to beat this place if you are looking for quality time with the family. You can have a look at our favourite moments in Martinhal Sagres here.
