After exploring the Alentejo region for about 2 weeks, we were looking for the perfect base to discover the South of Portugal. Lagos was our pick for the first stop in the Algarve. The town has an old part that retains the charm of a traditional Portuguese village, some great beaches within a short walking distance and Algarve’s most iconic rock formations a short drive away.
We found a large 2 bedroom apartment on AirBnB, a few meters away from one of Algarve’s most popular beaches – Dona Ana. It was part of a condominium that also had access to two pools, with sweeping views over the coast. The kids loved to spend a couple of afternoons relaxing at the pool after we explored the city and the Ponta da Piedade rock formations. You can check out the apartment in the video and we included a link to it in the Description. We would really recommend it for families who want to have easy access to both city and beach.
The must see of the Algarve and Lagos is definitely Ponta da Piedade a cluster of limestone rock formations located about 3 km away from Lagos city. We were mesmerised by the colours of the rucks and the water and the sheer drop off the coast cliffs. The boardwalk offers some great photo opportunities and it is great with small kids as it is placed a bit further away from the dangerous edge. It is also mostly flat so easy to navigate the Ponta da Piedade scenic walkway with a stroller or for people of reduced mobility. The sounds of thousands of cicadas added to the special atmosphere of this ‘end of the World’ place. We captured some of the magic on film and found that the drone footage really helps to get a birds eye view of this impressive natural wonder.
Our favourite restaurant during out time in Lagos was Tasca Jota. It was recommended by our landlord and we meet quite a few locals when we ate there. It is a bit of a hike outside the tourist center and the location is maybe not so inspiring behind an apartment building, but the food definitely makes up for it. We liked it so much we came back the next day to have dinner here again. It is probably among the top 3 we had during our road trip though Alentejo and Algarve.
Have you visited the Algarve? Where would you recommend us to visit next in the Algarve?
Safe and happy travels!
