10 things to do and see in Evora, Portugal 🇵🇹 – Perfect day trip from Lisbon

Evora is located about 1h 30 min by car from Lisbon, in the heart of the Alentejo region. It is a popular destination for day trips from Lisbon. But if you can give it a couple of days, you will find lots of things to explore and some great Alentejo food to try.

Our favorite experiences were walking in the old historical city, a UNESCO world heritage site and exploring the Roman ruins scattered around the city. Evora can be very hot in Summer and early autumn. As it located inland, there was no ocean breeze to cool us down in the evening so we did most of the sightseeing after 5 PM. The Evora public gardens were a great place to retreat for a bit of fresh air.

About 2 km from Evora is one of Alentejo’s oldest wineries: Adega do Cartuxa. We heard many good things about Alentejo wines and the fact that the cellars are located in buildings belonging to an old monastery made it even more intriguing. We booked the tour by phone a day in advance and could choose only to do the tour or tour and tasting of three Cartuxa wines.

Although not the friendly activity that most parents have in mind , our kids enjoyed the tour and running around on the vinery grounds. There were some interactive elements like smelling of the grape aroma or being able to look in the huge wine storing vats that they found more interesting. The tour guide was very friendly and the fact that we were a small group made it even more relaxed. Finally, as we had the wine tasting, kids could have some bread, crackers and olive oil. It did the trick to keep them entertained for the 2h that we spent in the Adega Cartuxa winery.

If you have any questions regarding Evora or the wine tour, let us know in the comments. I hope you enjoy the video and would be grateful if you have any feedback on the format or what activities you would like us to cover in the future.

Thanks for reading and watching!

Safe travel!
