First impressions of Zakynthos – toddler friendly beaches and calm seas

We landed in Zakynthos a couple of days ago and are still in exploration mode. Here are a few orientation tips if you consider this Greek island for you next ‘two plus’ beach getaway:

1. Unless you are in an all-inclusive or plan to go to one beach only, rent a car. Public transport is non existent outside Zante and many good beaches require a car ride or even a boat trip. Favour a small car over a large SUV; roads are narrow and many people use ATVs and scooters to move around making for some hectic driving, especially at night.

2. If beach is the main reason for the holiday and you prefer the non-party scene, base yourself in the South East of the island. After some research, we choose Vasilikos -Agios Nikolaos as our base and judging by the number of strollers, it is a perfect fit for a family with young children. The advantage of this small town location: 3 sandy beaches within walking distance (Plaka, Banana and Mavratzis). Perfect for a lazy afternoon (or day) when you just want to soak up a bit of sun and build a sand castle (or five) without the 10 min car ride. Within a short drive (5-10 min) two more beaches await: Porto Roma and Gerakas. Mavratzis is perfect for babies and toddlers, with a very flat sea entrance for 30 meters. It is a laid back beach but some speed boats may still pass you field of vision. Gerakas beach is a marine natural park, with no buildings, no boats and clear blue waters. On the downside, there are very few facilities for toddlers or even trash cans. You can rent two beach chairs and an umbrella but that is pretty much it. However, we believe that view alone is worth the extra drive to the very Southern tip of Zante. This and the chance to visit the turtle sanctuary at Gerakas (located in front of the free public parking) where little ones can see fish and baby turtles. Gerakas beach and sanctuary are pictured below.

3. Note that the biggest supermarkets are close to the airport (we went to Lidl). If you need to stock up on swim diapers or sun screen, do so once you leave the airport area and before heading South. You will save a 60 min car ride back and forth. Of course, there are small convenience stores in virtually every little village but the choice is limited and prices higher.

4. Consider self- catering. Your accommodation options will increase and you will get more choice in yummy Greek food if you decide to go for a self-catering apartment or house. The place we chose was ideal in terms of privacy and space, even for a bigger family (Allegria Villas) The playground and pool were just the cherry on the cake. As for most Greek islands, a tavern is never too far away and often provides better taste and value than the hotel dinners. More on food options in a separate post with recommended trips and activities on the island.

5. Bring a mosquito repellent. Although we have travelled to Greece before, I did not recall mosquitos being an issue. This time of the year, in Zakynthos, they can be very annoying at dusk and in the evening. I really regretted bringing only the ‘soft’ insect repellent. Bring something that you know works for your family as the choice in brands and the content might not be what you are used to at home.

I hope the tips are useful. Will be back with a blog post on toddler friendly activities, beaches and restaurants. Thanks for reading us!

Happy travels!
