A full day itinerary concentrating in and around Teguise, in the heart of Lanzarote. You should consider doing this itinerary on any day of the week except Sunday. On Sundays there is a big and rather touristic market taking place in Teguise old town that detracts from the peacefulness and serenity of the place.
1. Monumento al Campesino -impossible to miss really, it towers a busy intersection on the road from the South towards Teguise. One may stop to take a closer look (or a selfie) as there is a small garden and a restaurant just behind the monument. Apparently the restaurant serves good traditional fare but we were dissuaded by a couple of tourist busses that happened to park as we driving by.
2. Walk in old city of Teguise, good place for artisanal souvenir shopping. Think cobbled streets lined by rows of white houses. The central square has great charm and is the perfect place to take a rest while sipping on a cold beer. Allow about 1 h to walk around and soak up the atmosphere. Many small shops for original souvenirs, much nicer than the ones in the resort towns on the coast.
3. Monumento dela pirateria – Located in an old fortress perched on a hill. about one km from Teguise. The museum is actually more about the piracy history in general. The part that our LO found interesting was the exhibit of miniature pirate boats. On the rooftop terrace, we enjoyed sweeping, beautiful valley views. Definitely worth a short detour even if you are not that much into slave hunting pirates.
4. Wine tasting and wine museum: El Grifo – LZ-30, Km 11. San Bartolomé. The best treat ( for parents) for last. After a full tay of walking in the sun and reading pirate stories, every parent deserves a reward. This winery is the oldest in Lanzarote and has the most extensive choice of vintages. Some great red wines start at 5 Euro for one wine and a cheese plate. For 16 Euros you can try 6 wines. Hourly visits to the wine museum that take about 40 min. It is open from 10:30 a.m. to 6:00p.m. Daily (including bank holidays) and in Summer (July 19 to September 17) from 10:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. If you prefer white wine, head for the Bermejo Winery (open Mon to Fri from 8 to 15h) and located in the same village of San Bartolome.
That was our itinerary in the Lanzarote heartland. Leave a comment if you discovered more interesting sights in the area.
Happy Travels!
